The 1995 Teachers' Workshop was meant to develop lesson plans that could take advantage of the Viking Orbiter and Lander data sets. It is well known that even the best-intentioned planetary scientist has trouble writing for a high school or middle school audience, so we put genuine teachers to work creating lesson plans with the help of Mars researchers from NASA Ames Research Center.
The schedule was ruthless. The first week was filled with double sessions: morning and afternoon lecturers from NASA Ames to bring everyone up to speed on the martian geology, atmosphere, seasons, space missions, human space travel, etc. During the second week the teachers picked a topic to work on, outlined a lesson or activity, and presented it to the rest of the workshop.
